Chris Tomlin (born 4 May 1972)[1] is a Christian artist from Grand Saline, Texas.[2] He is known for his #1 worship hits such as Made to Worship and Indescribable.

Early Life[]

Tomlin was born and raised in East Texas, USA. He learnt the guitar by playing to music by Willie Nelson.[3]

Career[]

Tomlin began writing worship music in the late 1990s. After meeting Louie Giglio, founder of the Passion conferences, Tomlin released his debut album The Noise We Make in 2001.[3]

Tomlin's second album was entitled Not To Us, and was produced by Matt Bronleewe and Sam Gibson.[3] The album marked Tomlin's first appearance on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, peaking at number 13.[4] In 2004, Tomlin's third album, Arriving, was released, produced by Ed Cash.[3] The album reached number 3 on the Hot Christian Albums chart,[4] and included the single 'How Great Is Our God', which in 2006 became Tomlin's first song to top the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart.[5]

Tomlin released the album See The Morning in 2006,[6] becoming the first of his albums to top Billboard's Hot Christian Albums chart.[4] The album included the song 'Made To Worship', which spent 18 weeks atop Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart.[5] He released the album Hello Love in September 2008.[7] In late 2010, he released the album And If Our God Is For Us. . .[8] Both albums spent multiple weeks atop the Hot Christian Albums chart.[4]

In 2013, Tomlin released the album Burning Lights.[9] In October 2014, he released the album Love Ran Red, produced by Ed Cash.[10] In 2015, Tomlin released the first single from his album Never Lose Sight, 'Good Good Father', winning a Dove Award as well as topping Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart. The album was released in 2016,[11] topping the Hot Christian Albums chart.[4]

In 2018, Tomlin released the album Holy Roar. The album was inspired by a sermon by Darren Whitehead on praise in the bible, with Whitehead and Tomlin also releasing a book with the same title.[12] In 2020, Tomlin released the album Chris Tomlin and Friends, an album consisting of collaborations with other artists.[13] The album became Tomlin's first to reach the UK Christian and Gospel Albums chart, peaking at number 6.[14]

In March 2022, Tomlin released the single 'Always', alongside a collaboration with Elevation Worship entitled 'YAHWEH (No One)'.[15]

Faith[]

Tomlin allowed himself to be used for God's purpose at the age of 14. He later recounted the experience; 'I remember getting on my face and saying God, whatever it is you want me to do for the rest of my life, that's what I want to do'.[8]

Tomlin became worship leader of the Austin Stone Community Church in 2003. In a 2005 interview, Tomlin spoke about the importance he placed on worship music: 'The beautiful thing about worship music is that God is at the centre. It comes out of all artists who are really living out their faith, and their relationship with Jesus, because they can't help but worship him in their songs'.[3]

Tomlin added to this in a 2008 interview; 'Worship is a massive word with a very broad scope, but in the end, it's very simple. It is love! It's our response in love to our great God who loved us first'.[7]
